What to Do If Your Computer Freezes

Follow these steps in order to safely unfreeze your system.

Step 1: Wait a Moment

  • The computer may just be busy.
  • Wait 1–2 minutes to see if it starts responding again.

Step 2: Try the Keyboard

  • Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time.
  • If a menu appears, the computer is responding — continue to Step 3.
  • If nothing happens, skip to Step 4.

Step 3: Close a Problem Program

  • Click Task Manager in the menu that appeared.
  • Look for a program labeled "Not Responding".
  • Click it once and then click End Task.

✅ If the computer starts working again, you're done!

Step 4: Restart the Computer

  • Click the Start menu → Power → Restart.
  • Wait for the computer to turn off and back on.
  • Try working again.

Step 5: Force Restart (Only if Necessary)

If the computer is completely frozen:

  1. Press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds until it turns off.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button again to turn it back on.

⚠️ Only use this step if the computer doesn't respond at all.

Step 6: After Restarting

  • Open only the programs you need.
  • If it freezes again, write down what you were doing and what was open.
  • Contact IT support with that information.
